Smurfs in Hell was self-published by Robert Carr of Boise, Idaho in the last half of the 1980s. Carr created all the copy for the four volumes of Smurfs in Hell on his Apple II computer.
In the mid-to-late 1980s Carr worked the night shift at the Boise Kinko's copy shop on Capitol Boulevard. When things were slow, Carr would run off copies of Smurfs in Hell, which he either gave to friends or sold via mail. Working at Kinko's influenced the satirical tone of Smurfs in Hell, as Carr's duties often included running off multiple copies of publications created by fringe religious groups and political extremists (mostly white Christian-identity groups).
The content and humor of Smurfs in Hell is intentionally outrageous and will be seen as offensive by many readers. It is not an appropriate publication for children. That said, anyone with a taste for satire and inappropriate humor will find something to laugh at in the pages of Smurfs in Hell.
Carr later created a Smurfs in Hell video game that came on a 3.5" floppy disc. The object of the game was for the player to find gasoline in Utah while avoiding an angry sheriff. The game was won when the player was able to drive beyond the Utah state line. Donnie and Marie Osmond were characters in the game, as well.
