Who would have imagined that this short 35 pages of poems about social conditions would be the work of a writer that has come to accomplish so much. In a recent interview (July 2013) on the island of Sheng Si, on the east coast of China he shared glimpses of some of his most recent works and when I asked him about the notation numbers on the pages he replied, these were the poem numbers. His collection spans well over 50,000 poems! Macabre Affectatious is just a sample of his fledgling works that have blossomed into their own character with a voice that plays as smooth as jazz and grates on the soul like fingernails over a chalkboard with its imagery and meaning. A definite read to compare and contrast with his later works... that are absolutely breathtaking. This book covers a period of his life from his run-away years, when he left his boyhood home in Pennsylvania, through late in his first year in the U.S. Army. Knowing a little bit about this author is helpful in understanding the circumstances that add real-life definition to his works;but not knowing anything at all about him, as I knew nothing about him at all when I first was give a copy of his book from one of my high school teachers to read, I could identify with his style and his being in-tune with the common world around him. Later, when I learned about his personal life, I was amazed that the symphonies that he inspired in my mind still remained and I could not only explain his personal meanings to his works but could also apply them to my own experiences. Definitely a read that will change your perspective of the world forever.
