Lucile Ltd by Valerie D. Mendes and Amy de la Haye captures the essence of the Edwardian era and the spirit of one of its leading tastemakers, Lady Duff Gordon, known as "Lucile." The titled aristocrat behind this iconic, British-rooted brand was most noted for her sheer, light-as-a-feather lingerie and flowing tea-gowns which helped liberate women from tight corsets, enabling them to express their sexuality and sense of independence. This book concentrates specifically on the Victoria & Albert Museum's exquisite collection of Lucile costumes and archive material but also endeavors to address Lady Duff Gordon's influence on fashion as a designer and businesswoman. However, the biographical portion of this impeccably produced volume is not its strongest feature. The real appeal of the book rests on the glorious, full color facsimile of a sketchbook for Lucile Ltd's Fall 1905 collection.
Every page of this album, which today would be termed a "look book," is faithfully reproduced, down to the silk swatches and other trimmings that were originally attached to the drawings. A great many thumbnail size photos of Lucile dresses (from an archive donated by Lady Duff Gordon's family) are also included, and these are as impressive as the watercolors, although it would have been a more valuable tool for researchers to have these replicated as larger images. The work of Lucile has been examined recently by other scholars: Staging Fashion studies some of the gowns made by the designer for theatrical stars like Lily Elsie; a chapter in Performance, Fashion and the Modern Interior points out the innovatory style of the Lucile salons' decoration; and Lucile - Her Life by Design is a full-length illustrated biography. Lucile Ltd stands tall in this group of fine offerings as a pictorial feast celebrating the V&A's extraordinarily comprehensive collection of the pioneering couturiere's fabulous designs.
