Anderson is this generation's unsung great dystopian writer.
Like his other YA book, Feed, Landscape with Invisible Hand is a terrifying and terrible social commentary with characters that are eerily familiar in today's desperate times.
This story actually reminds me more of "Brazil", where the hero, a simple every man, tries to work within a system that is deliberately created to entomb and ultimately destroy all but the upper class.
The Vuvv come with amazing technological gifts at a terrible price: unlimited prosperity, unbreakable security, and perfect health for the Vuvv and the One Percent that can afford their services. The cost to the rest of the planet is universal unemployment, rampant crime, crippling debt, widespread ecological destruction, the dissolution of human rights, twenty-four hour monitoring, and complete social desperation.
Adam, the protagonist, works as hard as he could to work within the system, but the harder he tries, and the more he conforms to the increasingly unreasonable demands of the world's new masters, the deeper he sinks.
Like the movie Brazil and Anderson's book Feed, the protagonist finally realizes that the only way to win is not to play.
This is an important book. The language is raw and the action is desperate and brutal, but the characters are incredibly sympathetic and human. Like all good dystopian work, the conditions are just familiar enough to give a resonating shiver down one's spine.
Recommended for 15 years old and up.
