This book documents the struggles of the Onondaga County Medical Society to keep up the intellectual property of the ages and adapt to changing times from the frontier society of 1806 to the age of big government and business of 2006. Intially they educated, and tested physicians and gave out the Medical Doctorate degree and the State sanctioned license. In the early 1800's they argued the pros and cons of allopathy versus homeopathy; and protecting the public from misunderstanding/fraud versus self treatments and folk/commercial remedies. In the mid 1800's the State took over licensing and granting charters to medical schools to help mediate the infighting of medical factions. In the mid 1900's as medical care became much more successful business and the state became financiers to enable the workers and needy to gain access to better health.
In the late 1900's the Medical Society is fightening the harmful restrictions on practice coming from the financiers and the malpractice law that ignore the facts of medical science and practice. Big business, goverment, and law have data systems and analysis that overwhelm the immature and externally controlled nascent medical information systems. Hopefully health science in this century of biology and information technology will rebound from its past 200 years of infighting, external controls, and lack of information resources to again direct its own destiny within a civil, fair and transparent State.
