With regard to pleasure reading, non-fiction books are read by students in a much different manner now than in years and decades past. Non-fiction pleasure readers is a larger and still growing population. Here though lies the challenge: students gravitate towards materials that expose a large variety of a single subject, with some background issue, rather than a single subject with a variety of components. This book falls in the latter; as something that a student may just pick up and want to read, it may be less likely to happen as it is text heavy with a more textbook like font. On a different note, if a teacher is teaching this particular subject, it may be a great supplement for further investigating, or pulling a piece out to showcase. With the nature of the subject at hand though being one that is popular, it will likely get some checkout for pleasure reading just because it's about volcanoes.
While it does include the top ten worst volcanic eruptions, it would be even better to get a more global impact of various volcanic eruptions, historically. Students who pleasure read non-fiction books will want this kind of information.
The cover colors itself are engaging, and the picture will draw people in, which is in contrast to some of the other books in this series. The pictures seem dated for how new a publication date, which will turn some readers off, and is the key reason for the low rating. I would place it between fair and good, as decent.
