This is one of the best apologetics books I've read. It addresses some of the most difficult questions facing Christianity and tackles them head on with real honesty about the difficulties raised. It is full of research, data, statistics, which adds confidence that this is a well informed, measured response, not a flippant regurgitation of untested beliefs. But it is also very readable, written in a clear way, including some very personal illustrations that make it very winsome.
Here are the questions tackled:
1. Aren't we better off without religion?
2. Doesn't Christianity crush diversity?
3. How can you say there's only one true faith?
4. Doesn't religion hinder morality?
5. Doesn't religion cause violence?
6. How can you take the Bible literally?
7. Hasn't science disproved Christianity?
8. Doesn't Christianity denigrate women?
9. Isn't Christianity homophobic?
10. Doesbt the Bible condone slavery?
11. How could a loving God allow so much suffering?
12. How could a loving God send people to hell?
As you can see, the author does not hold back from some of the thorniest issues of the Christian faith. But not only does this book provide a defence against these big questions, it goes further to show that actually Christianity is the best answer to these issues and all other philosophies actually are less equipped to deal with these problems.
This is a great book for Christians to be strengthened in their faith, grow in confidence that Christianity does stand to scrutiny, and to be better equipped to answer these difficult questions when asked by non-Christian friends.
It is also a good book for the thinking non-Christian, if they are interested and open enough to read 200 pages, or maybe just to read the chapter that is most relevant to their biggest objections to the Christian faith.
I highly recommend it! Definitely my favourite book of the year so far.
