Good characters and generally well-written
The characters especially were very well written. I felt the ending was a bit out-at elbows, but this might just be leading up to a sequel. If so, they had darned well publish the sequel soon! I want to find out what happens to Sari!

I picked up this book one evening, intending to read for a bit and pick it up the next day. By the time I emerged, it was daylight again and I had devoured the whole book -- it was that gripping. Trust me -- I read a LOT of books, and I rarely find one as completely absorbing as this one.Gregson has created a tightly woven microcosm in her little Hungarian town. Its personalities, politics, troubles and joys ring true and clear. The characters are so well drawn that even the houses and the environs of the town seem to have personalities of their own. Gregson has the gift of drawing out the humanity in even the characters who would otherwise be the most unsympathetic. And in terms of description, the author strikes a good balance between observing detail and not getting tangled up in trivialities. One of my constant complaints about novels is pacing -- if it is too regular, the story can seem rote; if too varied, the reader can get a bad case of literary whiplash. I was overjoyed to find that Gregson's book has no such problems. I'll admit to being a bit leery of the plot at first. When I see the words "poison", "witch", "magic" and "midwife", I tend to think that the book is another by-the-numbers account of patriarchal abuse or otherwise some kind of uninteresting supernatural revenge fantasy in response to the same. So my only complaint about the book is the backmatter blurb -- the publisher needs to craft it with a bit more care an a better eye toward accuracy. But in spite of the publishers' unfortunate flaw, the quality of the book is unmistakable. Not only is it well-paced, finely drawn, well-characterized (and gripping to boot), but I also have learned that Jessica Gregson is a first-time novelist. If a book of this quality is what she brings out on her first attempt, I can't wait to see what she creates next. I think we can expect big things from her.
