This extremely rare collection is a selection of weird and supernatural stories, translated from the French of Auguste Vitu.

Originally published in 1860 as  'Contes à dormir Debout', Paris : Hachette (reprint in 1872, Calmann-Lévy), it is a well written and entertaining collection of tales, with original plots.

Contents :

1. The strange Phantasy of Dr. Trintzius (witchcraft & magnetism experiment upon a murderer)

2. The Three Visits (ghost story)

3. Sacrificing a Mandarin (weird tale : "Imagine a Mandarin of China ; a man who lives ten thousand miles away from you, in a scarcely known country, a man you will never see. Suppose the death of this mandarin, of this hypothetical creature will make you extremely wealthy ; and that it is merely necessary for you, here in France, to raise your finger to cause his death, thousands of miles away in China, without anyone being possibly abl to know anything of your action, say, would you raise that finger ?" And George d'Aubremel raised his finger...)

4. Harlequin's Mask (weird tale)

5. An Illusion Dispelled (ghost story)
